Instructors Contact Information

Adam Stein; 732-255-0400, ask for the Science Department – messages can be left with Kathleen Hamilton (732-255-0367). My email address is astein@ocean.edu; I can be reached there at all hours and I will try to reply as promptly as possible.

Office Hours are by appointment; scheduled tutorial meetings will occur in the Hiering building in either the first floor adjunct office or the student lounge on the second floor

Materials

Murphy, Catherine, Microbiology Laboratory Manual; internally published, available on request and in the shared directory in the Science departmental page.

Purpose Of the Lab Segment of Biol232

The laboratory will be used to supplement the lecture portion of the course. This is accomplished by having students work with instruments, specimens and chemicals to illustrate the basic operations and principals at work in a clinical (medical) microbiological laboratory.

Lab Overview And Policies:

ALWAYS CHECK OCEAN CRUISER . . . ALL CLASS COMMUNICATIONS (class cancellation, messages, etc.) WILL BE POSTED THERE!

The instructor reserves the right to implement announced changes to the syllabus, either in requirements or the conduct of the laboratory activity.

The topics of the labs will not necessarily be connected to issues in the lecture part of the course, although the underlying concepts will be discussed in lecture. Be prepared to think about the concepts behind the laboratory activity and how they are connected by biology as a discipline; cross-referencing the subject in your lecture text will help. We will always begin with a pre-lab discussion of experiment we will do. Please do not be late for labs. There is important information discussed at the beginning of each lab session and we will start on time. It is it is necessary for you to read the experiment in the manual before you come to lab. It is required that you attend all lab periods throughout the semester in order to pass this course. Missing any lab jeopardizes the grade for that lab, and will be considered in the computation of your course average. If must miss lab for some reason, discuss this with me first. There is no guarantee that a lab can be made up if it is missed. There will be one lab practical.

Unknown Isolate

An Unknown Isolate will be assigned towards the middle of the semester (see associated schedule). It is likely that an unknown isolate will not be available if you do not appear at the class where they are distributed. We cannot guarantee that laboratory time will be available to complete the unknown lab if you are absent for this lab.

Final Lab Grade

As you see the Lab is equal to 15% of your final grade for Biol232. The lab practical will constitute 50% of your grade laboratory grade and the interpretation of the data in your Unknown lab report will constitute 50%: the final grade will be scaled to 100 points.

Civility and Classroom Conduct

Ocean County College defines civility primarily as the demonstration of respect for others, basic courtesy, reciprocity (treating others as we wish to be treated), and behaviors that create a positive environment in which to learn and to work. [See www.ocean.edu/civility.htm]
